The Last Of Us Season 2 Ep.5
The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 5 has dropped, and it's as intense and emotional as ever. (If you haven't caught up yet, beware of spoilers!) In this episode, we dive deeper into Ellie's dark path to revenge, and it's not pretty.
After moving past day one of Ellie's time in Seattle, the episode focuses on her ongoing battle with the WLF. Ellie and Dina spend most of the episode hunting for Abby and her WLF comrades, with Ellie driven by an increasingly reckless thirst for vengeance. As The Last of Us Season 2 nears its end, Ellie's obsession with revenge is pushing her further into danger, but nothing seems to be able to stop her.
The Lakehill Hospital Showdown
The episode takes a dark turn after another flashback scene when Ellie and Dina, feeling a bit too confident, leave the theater and head to the Lakehill hospital. As they make their way through the city, they stumble upon a horde of Stalkers. Just when things seem hopeless, Jesse arrives to save them. But their gunfire draws the attention of the WLF, leading to a chaotic chase through a park where the group runs into the Seraphites. In a selfless move, Ellie distracts the Seraphites to buy time for Dina, who is injured, while Jesse helps her escape.
Ellie's Brutal Confrontation with Nora
Ellie's relentless quest leads her back to Lakehill alone, where she encounters Nora, one of Abby's friends. Holding Nora at gunpoint, Ellie demands information about Abby's whereabouts. After a brief struggle, Nora flees, and Ellie chases her to the hospital's lower levels, now infested with spores. While Nora begins to succumb to the infection, Ellie—immune as ever—continues her interrogation. Nora refuses to talk, and Ellie violently beats her with a pipe in a desperate attempt to extract the truth.
This brutal scene marks a turning point for Ellie. The violence is not just about gaining information—it’s about revenge. It’s a dark moment that highlights how Ellie's grief and anger are reshaping her into someone unrecognizable. Did Ellie kill Nora? The show leaves it ambiguous, but it's clear that the line between justice and vengeance is blurring.
Ellie’s Moral Descent
One of the most striking aspects of The Last of Us Season 2 is how Ellie’s journey mirrors some of the darkest characters from earlier in the series. Joel, Isaac, and now Ellie are among the few who are willing to torture and brutalize others to achieve their goals. The very violence Ellie condemned in others is now the violence she’s willing to commit herself. This begs the question: has Ellie crossed a line from seeking justice to becoming what she once despised?
Did Joel Ever Come Clean?
A major question fans have is whether Ellie ever learned the truth about Joel’s actions at the hospital from The Last of Us Season 1. Nora’s cryptic comment—"Don't you know what he did?"—puts the idea in Ellie's mind. Her response? "I don't care." This could mean Ellie still doesn’t know the full extent of Joel’s actions or that she found out later and forgave him. Either way, it hints at the complexity of Ellie's feelings about Joel.
The Introduction of Spores
One of the most notable changes in The Last of Us Season 2 is the introduction of spores, which were notably absent in the first season. In the games, spores are a critical part of the infected world, requiring survivors to wear masks. In the show, they’re far less common, only appearing in the lower levels of the hospital. The decision to include them now raises questions about how the show will handle infected environments moving forward.
Jesse’s Heroic Return
Just when things seem most dire for Ellie and Dina, Jesse shows up to save the day. It turns out he followed them from Jackson, teaming up with Tommy to track them down. Unlike the game, where Tommy ventures out alone first, the show chooses to bring Jesse into the action earlier. This change adds more depth to his character and builds tension for what’s to come.
Ellie’s Path to Revenge
As The Last of Us Season 2 progresses, it’s becoming clear that Ellie’s mission to find Abby isn’t just about justice—it’s about revenge. The rage that drives her is changing who she is, pushing her to darker and more violent places. While her friends worry, Ellie remains singularly focused. As the season builds to its climax, the question remains: how far will Ellie go before she realizes that vengeance might destroy her?
